Sample chart: a strawberry, 30 × 30 knots (8 × 8 in on 3.75-mesh latch hook canvas) in 12 DMC colors. Every cell is filled, background included, since latch hook is usually worked edge to edge. Choose a photo to chart your own at 60 knots wide.

Share of yarn is each color's part of all knots. How much yarn that is depends on your yarn weight and tension: work a 10 × 10 swatch, weigh or measure the yarn it used, and scale by these counts. Thread and bead colors on screen are approximations of the real material.

What this latch hook pattern maker makes

Latch hook rugs and wall hangings are worked on a coarse canvas with one knot of pre-cut yarn in every hole. At 3.75 holes per inch the grid is coarse, so designs should be bold: pets, initials, simple landscapes.

Each knot uses one piece of cut yarn, so the knot count per color in the key is also the number of yarn pieces to cut or buy.

How big a latch hook chart comes out

Finished width = knots × 6.77 mm. The table uses the nominal grid (3.75-mesh latch hook canvas); real pieces vary slightly with the material, your yarn and your tension.

How to read a latch hook chart

Each square is one knot. Work in rows from the bottom of the canvas up, so the pile from finished rows falls away from the row you are hooking.

Keep the printed chart beside you and mark the canvas with a marker every 10 holes to match the chart grid lines.

Materials for latch hook charts

  • 3.75-mesh rug canvas, cut with a margin of several holes on every side for hemming.
  • Pre-cut rug yarn or acrylic yarn cut to equal lengths, one piece per knot.
  • A latch hook tool and a permanent marker for grid lines.
  • Rug binding tape or a backing fabric for the finished edge.

Make a latch hook chart from a photo

  1. Choose a bold image

Large shapes and strong contrast read well in pile.

  2. Set the width in knots

The page shows the rug width; 60 knots is about 16 inches.

  3. Limit the colors

Eight to twelve colors keeps cutting and sorting manageable.

  4. Cut the yarn

Cut one piece per knot from the counts in the key, in equal lengths.

  5. Hook row by row

Start at the bottom and work upward, then bind the edges.

Tips for latch hook charts

  • Cut all yarn of one color before you start so the pile height is even.
  • Pile hides fine detail; a 3.75-mesh canvas cannot show thin lines, so thicken outlines in the image first.
  • The DMC numbers in the key are a color guide only; rug yarn colors are named differently.
  • Bind the edges before using the piece as a rug, or the outer knots will work loose.

DMC color pages

Each page lists the color's hex value and its nearest equivalents in other brands by CIEDE2000.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a latch hook pattern from a photo?

Yes. Upload the photo, choose the width in knots and the number of colors, and the tool makes a chart with a knot count per color, which is also how many yarn pieces you need.

How big is a 60-knot latch hook rug?

On 3.75-mesh canvas, 60 knots is 16 inches (about 41 cm) wide. The table on this page lists other widths.

How much yarn does a latch hook rug need?

One cut piece per knot. Multiply the knot count in the key by the length you cut each piece to get the yarn length per color.

How big is a 90-knot latch hook chart?

90 knots at 6.77 mm each come out 61.0 cm (24.0 in) wide. A square design that size has 90 rows and 8,100 knots.
